Include an "other" option in a multiple choice poll

Slido Team

You can add the “other” option to a multiple choice poll by using a survey. This gives your audience the freedom to submit their own response to your poll question.

Available in our Engage plan and higher.

To include the “other” option for your multiple choice poll, see the below steps for creating a survey:

  1. Click + Add and select Survey
  2. Name the survey if you wish, or simply click + Add first question
  3. Choose Multiple choice

Create the survey

Next, enter your poll:

  1. Enter your multiple choice poll with the last option being Other (please specify)
  2. Select + Add another question and choose Open text
  3. For the Open text poll, enter Specify “Other”
  4. Your survey will save automatically
Add “Other” as an open text poll

Now you’re all set. To see how it will look for participants, activate your survey and select View as participant.

Test your survey

What if I’ve already created my multiple choice poll?

If you already have your multiple choice poll, you can create the open text poll and merge the two together

Hi @Clizen

The limit is 10 000 characters. Hopefully, that can be enough. :)

Best wishes,

Adam

hi so the ‘Others’ option is a workaround, and not a automatic dropdown of empty ‘text field’ if and only if ‘Others’ option is selected...

Hey @CPBC Ops ,

Thanks for commenting! Could you explain a bit more about what your preferred flow would look like? This would help us understand your comment a bit more and to submit this as feedback.

Best,

Best,

hi, thanks for the reply. I presume when someone select “Others” option, then a new text field will appear, like it is in regular survey form (e.g google form). If “others” option is not selected, then it will not be shown.

@Carly from Slido - this limitation is a significant one for our Enterprise account’s needs. Is there a timeframe that Slido intends to make this improvement please?

Hey @Stavros ,

This feature is not currently on our roadmap but as a workaround you could create a Survey, ask the Multiple Choice Poll and then below that, have an Open text poll to fulfill the “Other" drop down option if they wouldnt like to choose any of the other options there.

Let us know if this helps!

Best,

Thanks for the response @Carly from Slido. Unfortunately that is a poor workaround as it hinders analysis and is making polls unnecessarily longer. Could you please relay the message to the team that it would be a very useful improvement to implement (and one that all online survey tools have as a default)?
