I’ve searched online, but the instructions don’t match the controls I currently see.
I want my participants to view a quiz question before the timer starts. I can change the timer length, remove a timer and start/stop the entire quiz, but I can’t figure out how to display a question and THEN start the timer for answers.

We currently do not have such an option, I am afraid. But it is an interesting idea. I would encourage you to submit it to our product wishlist. This is reviewed periodically when we plan new features.
As a workaround, you could use a PowerPoint or Google slides presentation and use a slide to separate the questions. Then copy the text of the question into the slide and it will be completely up to you when you move to the next slide to active Slido and the timer connected to the question.
